2025 NSW & Intervarsity Champs -- summary & results

NSW Champs banner annotated

The winning 24hr family team, Craig, Archer, & Violet Mottershead from the ACT

Finally, a rogaine where it didn't rain. A big thanks to all the teams who took part in the 'Werong a mission' NSW 24-hour and national Intervarsity Championships, especially the 8 intervarsity teams and the 9 other interstate teams (not counting the nearby ACT) containing members from Vic, Tas, SA, Qld & WA, who came so far.

We were lucky to have crisp sunny days and cold clear nights -- ideal weather for a 24-hour rogaine -- and reports are the food was to a very high standard at both the main Hash House as well as the mid-course all-night café.

Tristan White, the organiser and setter, created a traditional 24-hour bush rogaine in a very scenic setting. It was deliberately set in moderately tough terrain with challenging but gratifying navigation that makes you want to come back for more (when you get it right that is).

And, by the accounts of some of the subsequent Facebook posts, Tristan succeeded in doing that admirably. David Baldwin described it as "a tough event! Lots of steep hills and slow off the tracks. A challenging course to plan and execute."

The absence of a moon for the first half of the night made things even more interesting. No room for complacency. There's nothing like being out in the bush in pitch blackness to focus the mind on the problem at hand and keeping on going when things get tough.

That's rogaining -- "the sport of thought"!

Spring Challenge Cancelled

We rarely cancel events, but unfortunately the Spring Challenge Rogaine, scheduled for 18th October, has been cancelled due to circumstances that compromise the safety and quality of the event.

After much work by the organisers, it became clear that it would be impossible to proceed with an event that maintained the safety and rogaining experience that we strive to deliver.

We understand the disappointment this may cause, especially for those who’ve planned and trained for this inaugural State vs Territory challenge. We anticipate that the effort the organising team has put in on the excellent rogaining country in the Bungonia area won’t go to waste and the event may re-emerge in next years calendar. Stay tuned.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. The good news is that entries in the Socialgaine on 2nd November have just opened (see below). This'll be our last event for the year, so don't miss it.

"Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor?"*

*Daytrip To Bangor (Didn't We Have A Lovely Time) - Fiddler's Dram (Top of the Pops 1979)

Prepare for a big day out on Sydney’s southern fringe for an urban-to-wilderness experience where people and the bush meet. The course will have superb views from numerous scenic lookouts, and swimming spots. Public transport will be a viable travel option, with the Hash House only a 25 minute walk from Engadine Railway Station.

Imagine stepping back in time to a pre-European existence in the midst of long gentle valleys, steep hillsides, rarely travelled gullies, and gravity-confirming creeks looking for the mysteriously named Woronora River.

NSW Champs melange

You'll encounter sculptured sandstone formations amongst eucalypts, cockatoos, Gymea Lilies, kookaburras, grass-trees, water dragons, tree ferns, wallabies, and even koalas; and there'll be a multitude of course planning options for your puzzle-hungry brain.

And, when you finish exploring, return to the well-appointed Hash House at Engadine’s spacious Anzac Oval Youth & Recreation Centre for delicious and refreshing food & drink, and swap stories about the day’s adventures.

So, mark your diary for the 2025 6-hour Socialgaine to explore the "Woronora River, Valleys, & Heights" on Sunday 2nd November. (There'll be plenty of parking at Anzac Oval and in surrounding streets if you don’t come by train.)
