"Your Guide to Rogaining in NSW"

eNewsletter 29  -  January 2012

G'day Rogainers,

Entries are open now for the Metrogaine 6 Hour and will soon open for the Minigaine 3 Hour.

Metrogaine 6 Hour “The Baygaine” : 12 February 2012

Course setter Richard Green has been hard at work finding pleasant parkland locations for checkpoints and having lattes at local cafes. There should be no shortage of course options, water views and places to stop for refreshments along the way. There will be plenty of pram/child-friendly options too, if you are looking to compete in the family category. There may even be a chance/need to swim or walk the plank!
This is a 6 hour event.  The start will be at 9am on Sunday 12th February.  Controls sites will not have any markers.  Instead your clue sheet will have a description of the control site and a question relating to the site with multi choice answers.  Giving the correct answer is your proof you visited the control.
Entries are now open so get yourself a partner organised and your entry in before entries close on 5 February.

Minigaine 3 Hour : 18 March 2012

In March, the bite-sized Minigaine is back -by popular demand. This year the event will cover a mix of street and bushland navigation in Sydney's North Shore. Because the event has proven popular with the Sydney orienteering community and is gaining status as a sort of cross-over event, NSWRA has joined forces in 2012 with Orienteering NSW, to make the Minigaine serve as one of the events in the very popular Sydney Summer Series. Note that you don't have to be competing in the Summer Series to take part in the Minigaine - it is an NSWRA event just like always....

We will have the usual mix of cunningly placed and scenic checkpoints, and like previous years there will be a rolling start, allowing you to start anytime between 1 pm and 3 pm - finishing 3 hours later. Note that the event will be 'on' regardless of the weather (we are hoping for less rain than last year!).

Entry information here.

2012 Australian Rogaining Championships

The entry form is now on the Australian Rogaining Championships (ARC) website as well as the list of teams that have entered so far.

University Championships will be held in conjunction with this event and students are eligible for a subsidy of $40 towards their entry costs, while one University team from each State or Territory will be fully sponsored thanks to the Nigel Aylott Memorial Sports Foundation. Full details are on the ARC website and NSW students should contact Gill Fowler events@nswrogaining.org

Check out the photos of the event location on the website. For lovers of the Australian bush, these are an inspiration to get out there.

2012 Events

Our calendar for 2012 is taking shape - find the latest in the online Events Calendar.  Fixtures so far include:

  • The Metrogaine on 12 February: Richard Green - who's brought us several memorable Metrogaines in recent years - is at it again, this time in the parks and bays of the inner west.
  • The Minigaine on 18 March: back by popular demand, and slowly becoming a regular feature on our calendar.  Ted Woodley, who brought us the 2011 Minigaine, is currently planning the 2012 event, back on Sydney's North Shore.  We're hoping for a little less rain this year!
  • The Autumn event 19-20 May: Two of our most prolific competitors, Richard Sage and Nihal Danis, are turning their hands to course-setting and planning to bring us an upside down rogaine for this year's autumn event.  Not sure what an upside down rogaine is?  You'll have to wait and find out!
  • The Paddy Pallin on 17 June: Rob Vincent has already been hard at work in the field to bring us a great Paddy Pallin rogaine in 2012.  We'll be heading west of Sydney for open eucalypt forest with impressive sandstone features, but we won't say any more just yet...
  • The Lake Maquarie on 18 August: Bob Gilbert is bringing us another Lake Macquarie, as popular for its Tea and Damper as for the rogaining itself!  This year we return to the regular weekend - no City to Surf clash.
  • The Spring event on 6-7 October: Amazingly, Michael Watts is ready to do it all again, and is lining up our Spring event.  We can rely on Michael for an event to please all comers, from the leisurely walkers to the lycra-clad.
  • The Socialgaine on 18 November: We’ll be travelling north for the socialgaine this year. Martin Dearnley has put his hand up to set a fun course, there’ll be beaches, bays and bush.

Put the dates in your diary/calendar/phone or however you do it now!

Forum

We now have an online forum where every rogainer is invited to contribute to discussions about rogaining in NSW. Please visit the forum and share your thoughts and experiences with us all!

Volunteering

Finally, Rogaining is a volunteer-run sport.   So if you have been enjoying the sport, think about helping out at an upcoming event.

Visit the volunteer page and/or contact our volunteer co-coordinator Ian Dempsey  ( volunteer@nswrogaining.org )  to find something that suits you.   Volunteers who make a major contribution to an event are rewarded by free entry (!) to a NSWRA organised Rogaine, or a contribution to a recognised training course (such as first aid or event management training).
