Lake Macquarie 6/12hr – Saturday 20th August – Entries Closing Monday 15th August!

Bob Gilbert, Bert Van Netten and Ian Dempsey have found a wonderful and unique starting location. They have set an exciting map area with the help of fellow setters Dug Floyd and Neil Chappell.

The flora opens up into beautiful open spotted gums, some ancient strands of melaluecas and stunning spurs and gullies of gymea lillies. Sweeping water courses and broad open spurs will have you feeling like you have fallen in with the likes of Robin Hood. There are a myriad of vehicular and foot tracks on the map. The tracks have some rare finds of million year old fossils and a petrified forest. You may stumble across a wombat or two, or see the markings of a quoll.

The event will be held in the Sugarloaf Conservation Area and there will be a mass start at midday on Saturday 20th August. Come and enjoy a wonderful location and celebrate the 25th anniversary of this event.

Camping is available at the Hash House.

World Rogaining Championships – 23-24 July 2016

Well done to all the NSWRA members who went out to Alice Springs to compete in the 2016 World Rogaining Championships in the East McDonnell Ranges on the weekend. All would agree it was a spectacular, yet painful course, full of spiky spinifex, steep hills, sharp rocks. At it times very hot but overall it was an absolutely fantastic event. We are proud to announce that 5 NSW teams received podium placings:

  • Nic Pittman & Ciara Smart: 2nd in Mixed Youth (U23), 1900 points.
  • Tristan White & Mitch Lindbeck: 3rd in Male Youth, 2420 points.
  • Andrew & Nicole Haigh: 2nd in Mixed Veterans, 2650 points.
  • Andrew Smith & Toni Bachvarova: 1st in Mixed Veteran, 3rd in Mixed Open, 2690 points.
  • Mike Hotchkis & Neil Hawthorne: 2nd in Male Super Veterans, 2870 points.
  • Plus Ronnie Taib & David Williams with the highest NSWRA point score 3250 (and 10th overall!)

Full results including each team’s leg statistics, electronic map, reports, photos and more can be found on WRC website.

The event even made ABC headlines !

I’ve written a more detailed report of my personal experience on the course, to give others a better feel for what a world championship event is like, and how we missed a 2nd place by just 10 points! Check it out here..

We wish Greg Barbour a speedy recovery from his injuries following a serious accident at the rogaine. Greg is a former world rogaining champion and current Orienteering NSW president.

Thanks again to the team that put on this grand scale event, particularly course setters David Baldwin & Julie Quinn, and event coordinator & vetter Richard Robinson. No rogaine is any small effort to organize, I know that planning had been occurring over two years prior to it, so to have it all go through seamlessly is a grand achievement.

Just a reminder that WRC 2017 will be held in Latvia on 18-19 August, and entries open December 1 for those inspired to travel further afield!

Australasian Rogaining Championships 2016 – 17-18 September

The recent fuss over the WRC may have overshadowed talk about the ARC, but it is no less on than any other year. The Australasian Championship for 2016 is on 17-18 September, hosted by the Western Australian Rogaining Association. The event location is Nannup, 3.5 hours south from Perth.

On offer is a course with a wide range of terrain. About 60% of the map is forest including recently cleared pine plantation, old growth pine plantation and long ago logged Karri and Jarrah forest. The remaining 40% of the map is farmland: a mixture of sparsely vegetated paddocks and blue gum plantation.

Event Coordinator is Warren Smith, course setters are Jeff Conrades and Ian Thomsett with vetters Bryan McClintock, Geoff Hearne. The event website is: ARC 2016.

Spring Rogaine & NSW Championships (8/24h) – 15-16th October - Save the Date!

David Williams and Ronnie Taib are setting the next NSW Champs near Jenolan. The area has not been used previously for a rogaine so you are assured to find new sights, sites and experiences. We’ll post more information in the next month.

Call for Volunteers

Our sport depends on people contributing time and energy to the organisation of our events. See the volunteers calendar and if you’d like to put your hand up, or know more about roles please get in touch with Graham Field (who replaces Dale as she moves overseas) or contact the event organiser.

Not ready for a major role? How about helping out as an assistant to the registration team or event organiser? There are also other odd jobs that require assistance during the year such as equipment maintenance, trailer towing, administrative tasks (such as searching for a better insurance deal), etc.
